There was no option to fully explain the situation with Game Studies ... they simply held onto our manuscript for nearly TWO YEARS without it ever going to review.
We made the initial submission sometime during Spring of '12 (cannot recall the exact date), and they confirmed receiving the submission. Then after months of not hearing anything we had to repeatedly inquire (finally getting some feedback nearly a year later, only to find that they had 'lost' the manuscript.
We re-submitted in May 2013, and they confirmed receiving the manuscript and said review should take place in 2-5 months and they'd try to expedite it. Again, months pass and after multiple inquiries they finally reply with 'we're still looking for reviewers' ... months pass, new inquiry ... 'still looking.'
Finally, we pulled out the manuscript in August 2014 ... two years and the manuscript was never even reviewed.

Submitted to a special issue of Game Studies. Given that I had heard rumors about long turnaround times and unhelpful reviews, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and the timeliness of the reviews. I cannot tell if the same holds for regular issues.
