I am quite happy with the submission and review experience at this journal. The turnaround time was amazingly quick (just two weeks) and for that short timespan we received very detailed, helpful and constructive feedback, which was also critical at some points but with a clear message and direction. After some substantial revisions, the editor accepted the paper and it was published shortly afterwards. Overall, a very good and positive submission experience.

I submitted to First Monday in 2008. At the time I didn't know much about how the peer review process typically goes. Like others have mentioned, my article was accepted without any comments from the editor or reviewers. I haven't come across another journal that has such a reputation for lack of comments. Looking back on my piece, it's hardly perfect and could certainly have been improved upon.

So my experience with First Monday is a bit of a mixed bag -- I would not recommend submitting here unless you have a piece that is somewhat experimental but not complete junk, and simply want to get it out in a few months rather than deal with the headache of multiple rounds of revisions. You'll get visibility, citations, but not necessarily a line on your C/V to be proud of, nor revisions that substantively improve the article.

Getting a first monday paper is a morale boost to grad students perhaps, but I'm really not convinced the peer review process is exactly rigorous.

It took six months to the day to get a decision back. It was an immediate accept, but no peer reviews. So I'm of two minds here--obviously it's great to have another published paper, but it would have been nice to have seen what the referees had to say.

There was no review, actually. No comments whatsoever on the article. Considering the extended time between submission and acceptance, it was very disappointing not to hear anything from anyone.
